Sneak Peak: HKS Engine

Sneak Peak: HKS Engine

A cold front came through and I have been grounded for 3 days. Good time for another blog post although I don’t have any new flight data. I do have some interesting news to leak. A Merlin is being outfitted with the HKS 700E! Good news for those wanting to have a 4-stroke. Good news for those wanting a reliable and proven aircraft engine. Bad news for those wanting a Merlin for $35k.  I won’t quote the cost of this engine at this time but I expect it could be double that of the Rotax 582 or 0-100. That being said, I still want one! I am partial to 4-stroke engines. However my position on 2-strokes has softened considerably after flying the Merlin with the 582. The acceleration is so impressive, the engine runs very well, and my confidence level has soared along with the Merlin!

HKS on the Merlin

So how will it work? I expect very well. It is 60hp vs 65 on the 582 but it has more hp at the power settings I expect to run at so cruise should be better, climb maybe a little less. However that can be reversed with choice of prop and prop settings. Regardless fuel consumption will definitely be a lot less so the range is significantly increased for those who plan long cross countries (like me, I plan to fly the Merlin to Oshkosh, on floats!)

There is not surprisingly, a lot of interest in a 4-stroek powered Merlin. And quite a few suggestions to use the HKS. For those waiting for the 0-100 do not give up hope just yet. New crank shafts have been delivered and new 0-100s should be ready for testing soon. I reserved space in my booth at Sun n Fun for the first engines.

Tomorrow I will fly a lot. I mounted the VIRB camera on the tail for a new perspective. And I plan to make some stalls with 25 lbs in the baggage area. That should be more interesting than the non-event stalls I have attempted so far. Watch this space!
