SSDRs come of age with the Merlin, electric aircraft step
forward, and the appeal of the Dark Continent

At last the rain has eased and the strips are drying out. It’s even warmed up a bit here in Kent just before Easter, so I hope wherever you are you are also starting to feel the first warmth of Spring. I’m going to cheat and will be off to Sun ‘n Fun in a couple of weeks! Our cover story this month is the delightful TechPro Aviation Merlin SSDR that caused such a stir at the FL YER Live show last November. Graham Smith of Sprite Aviation Services is marketing the design in the UK and, I think rightly, regards the aircraft being much more representative of a small aeroplane than a typical SSDR. You can pull it out of the hangar, fill her up
and fly off to a fly-in a hundred or more miles away, just as you might with a Eurostar or a
Jodel. Due deference needs to be paid to wind strength, particularly crosswinds, as this is after all, a very lightweight machine, but in, terms of general performance it holds its own… Download PDF to read more
